AMEI Accounting: Expanding Access to Financial Services in South Minneapolis

Abdirizak Omar, owner of AMEI Accounting, understands the meaningful role that accounting services can play in the community. The small, South Minneapolis-based firm specializes in individual and business tax preparation, payroll processing, and bookkeeping for business owners. In addition, AMEI Accounting assists with new business licensing and provides consulting and advising for clients on a variety of personal and business-related questions. Many of the clients Abdirizak serves come from communities that are often underserved.

This is a story Abdirizak knows firsthand. One of the major barriers his business has faced is limited access to capital for growth, as well as difficulty securing loans to expand office space. For a business like AMEI Accounting, obtaining loans from traditional banks can be challenging or nearly impossible.

“I wish there were more local banks that specialize in minority and underserved businesses that can help with working capital access.”

Despite these obstacles, Abdirizak persevered and eventually discovered the MN PROMISE Act grant through the website. The grant brought renewed hope, as it provided an opportunity to support the growth of AMEI Accounting. With the grant funding, Abdirizak plans to acquire new office furniture to create a more welcoming environment for customers. He also plans to hire an additional employee to help manage the high demand that comes during peak tax season.
