Creating Meaning Through Art: Kim Matthews’ Story

Art has the power to transform not only spaces, but entire communities. Kim Matthews knows this all too well. As an artist for over 25 years, she has sculpted, designed, and created countless art pieces and graphics that have been admired at Minnesota art centers, university galleries, private galleries, and even featured on TPT’s Minnesota Original. However, Kim’s work goes beyond just creating art pieces in her Powderhorn Park studio. She also provides graphics and writing-related services to various mission-driven individuals, educators, publishers, nonprofits, and small businesses in Minnesota.

Being a professional artist brings joy and a sense of purpose to Kim’s life, but it also comes with challenges. With the expansiveness of AI, Kim is finding it even more difficult to get work that pays a living wage. Additionally, Kim’s age makes it difficult for her to retrain into a different career path. The stress of economic instability combined with a rapidly changing business climate makes it particularly challenging for Kim to create new work. However, she has been preparing for her first solo exhibition since 2021, which she hopes will increase awareness of her work.

The Minnesota PROMISE Act was beneficial to Kim as she does not create topical work, which limits her ability to compete for state artist grant funding. With the funds, she will be able to expand and refine her work. Kim also noted:

“Anything I can do that will help me stabilize my income will enable me to make further physical improvements to my studio, which ultimately helps revitalize our community and enhance neighborhood property values.”
