Studio Apparatus: Bringing New Art into an Old Building
Studio Apparatus, located in the Camden neighborhood of North Minneapolis, provides a space for artists to create. The studio can be used by photographers, videographers, and other artists for a variety of creative activities. The staff at Studio Apparatus foster a helpful and welcoming environment by providing knowledge to visitors and by setting up photography gear for individual shoots. Additionally, the space can be rented as a venue for private and public events under the name “The Arthouse”. This space has been utilized for weddings, parties, fundraisers, and even craft nights. The building itself has stood since 1903 and Studio Apparatus continue to bring new life into it. With a goal of developing a safe and creative space for community as well as a place for people to explore their artistic side, Studio Apparatus continues to foster new, beautiful memories.
Since 2023, Studio Apparatus has been located in North Minneapolis. That is because of barriers faced at their previous St. Paul location. With increased rent prices and the gentrification of the former area, they had no other choice but to relocate. Now, new problems arise in the current location with the century-old building. Much of the business funds have been directed toward restoring the building to ensure that artists can use it and feel safe in it.
The Minnesota PROMISE Act can do just that. As mentioned by a Studio Apparatus staff member, “The funding from this grant would help ease stress of paying rent so that we can focus on helping our clients.” In addition, the grant funds will also go toward payroll. Studio Apparatus also hosts residencies for underserved artists, so the grant funds will help pay for supplies and studio time for these individuals.
