Expanding Community Impact: How the PROMISE Act Supports African Community Senior Services

Said Ali, owner of African Community Senior Services, has been serving the South Minneapolis area since 2009. The nonprofit focuses on three key programs. First, the organization acts as a marketplace for people to sign up for health insurance, specifically through the Affordable Care Act and MNsure. Second, it provides transportation for disabled individuals and senior citizens to places such as grocery stores and community events. Third, the organization offers free tax‑filing services to low‑income individuals.

“We focus on making the maximum positive effort for our community. Our members and volunteers provide the momentum that helps us affect change. Using data‑driven models, we provide solutions that make a long‑lasting difference.”

The Minnesota PROMISE Act came at a pivotal time for Said and African Community Senior Services. After discovering the grant program on the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) website, Said began his application. With the intention of expanding his organization’s capabilities, particularly by providing more services that revitalize the community, the grant would be incredibly beneficial for the nonprofit. Said’s current work is already returning value to the community through tax assistance services, and his health insurance enrollment support helps residents stay healthy. Receiving the MN PROMISE Act grant will further increase the impact of Said’s work.
